03 Sep, 2023

Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh in an Asia Cup pool game by 89 runs. The loss has made their chances of advancing to the Super 4 stage difficult. They now need to beat Sri Lanka by a big margin

Ibrahim Zadran’s 75 and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s 51 could not save Afghanistan from embarrassment as they lost to Bangladesh by 89 runs in the Asia Cup, on Sunday.

They now have to beat Sri Lanka by a big margin to stay in contention of a place in Super 4s.

Bangladesh had scored 334/5 in 50 overs with Mehidy Hasan Miraz scoring 112 and Najmul Hasan Shanto making 104. The Afghan bowlers were so ineffective that only Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gulbadin Naib picked one wicket each. Three of the Bangladeshi batsmen were run out.

In response, Afghanistan were bowled out for 245 in 44.3 overs. Taskin Ahmed picked 4/44 and Shoriful Islam took 3/36.

Pakistan-India tie abandoned by rain

India and Pakistan put up an intriguing fight before the game had to be abandoned without it being completed. India managed to score 266 all out in 48.5 overs.

Ishan Kishan made 82 and Hardik Pandya scored 87. Pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi (4/35), Naseem Shah (3/36) and Haris Rauf (3/58) were among the wickets.

But the skies opened up and Pakistan’s innings couldn’t be completed.
