New Zealand's Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected unopposed in 2022. However, he has decided not to contest for the third term
The International Cricket Council (ICC) will get a new Chairman after the current holder of the post, Greg Barclay, has confirmed that he will step down and won’t contest for a third tenure.
“Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he would step down as the ICC Chairperson after his tenure ends in November,” said a statement from the ICC.
Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected unopposed in 2022.
According to an official aware of the development, “The last date of filing nominations for the post of the Chairman is August 27.”
Current directors are required to submit nominations for the next Chairman by August 27, 2024. If there are more than two candidates, an election will be held, with the new Chairman’s term beginning on December 1, 2024.
As per the rules, a candidate must be nominated by at least one Full Member of the ICC after which his name is assessed by the nomination committee.
The Board members then vote for their choice of Chairman and the candidate getting a simple majority, that is, 51% of the votes becomes the Chairman.
N Srinivasan (2014-2015), Shashank Manohar (2015-2020), Imran Khwaja (Interim in 2020, from July to November), and Greg Barclay (2020-2024) have occupied the ICC Chairman’s post in the past.
