Bangladesh make it to Super 8s; West Indies top Group C

18 Jun, 2024

Thanks to Netherlands' loss to Sri Lanka and their own 21-run win in close encounter against Nepal, Bangladesh make it to the next stage where they will play Australia, India and Afghanistan

Nepal gave Bangladesh a run for their money but couldn’t stop them from marching to Super 8s stage of the T20- World Cup from Group D.

The Bangladeshis were restricted to 106 all out in 19.3 overs and were in danger of losing their last league match in Kingstown at St Vincent when Nepal, after a poor start, moved to 78/5 in the 17th over thanks to a 52-run partnership between Kushal Malla and Dipendra Singn Airee.

However, Mustafizur Rahman removed both of them to give Bangladesh a win and two crucial points that helped them finished second behind South Africa and qualify to the next stage.

They would have anyway qualified since the contenders for the second spot in the Super 8s, Netherlands lost to Sri Lanka by 83 runs in Gros Islet, St Lucia and slipped to fourth position in the group.

Bangladesh face Australia (June 21), India (June 22) and Afghanistan (June 25).

In a Group C game at St Lucia, West Indies thrashed Afghanistan by 104 runs to occupy the first place. Both the teams had already qualified ahead of New Zealand before facing each other in the last league match for a fight for the first position. Nicholas Pooran’s 53-ball 98 took the West Indians to 218/5 in 20 overs.

The home bowlers then skittled out Afghanistan for 114 in 16.2 overs.
