Bumrah's 150, Jaiswal's first double as India beat England in 2nd Test

05 Feb, 2024

Jasprit Bumrah's 9/91, Yashasvi Jaiswal's 209 in first innings and Shubman Gill's 104 in second help India register a 106-run win over England in the second Test at Visakhapatnam to bring the 5-Test series level at 1-1 after two Test matches

India bounced back to level the 5-Test series 1-1 after two Tests as they defeated England by 106 runs in the second Test at the Visakhapatnam on Monday (February 5, 2024).

Chasing 399 on the fourth day, England were bowled out for 292 as off-spinner R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets each.

India had batted first and scored 396 thanks mainly to a double century (209) by Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-handed batsman scored those runs off 290 balls, hitting 19 fours and seven sixes.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir and pace bowler James Anderson took three wickets each.

England were bowled out for 253 in their first innings with opener Zak Crawley scoring 76 off 78 balls. The Ben Stokes-led side were progressing smoothly but Bumrah ran through the batting line-up, picking 6/45 in 15.5 overs. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took 3/71 in 17 overs.

The big 143-run lead was always going to be tough for England and even though they dismissed India for 253 runs with Tom Hartley taking 4/77 and Rehan Ahmed picking 3/88, they had to chase 399 in fourth innings. Shubman Gill made 104 although he was lucky early on.

England began the chase well, moving to 95/1 on fourth morning but then they started losing wickets at regular intervals.

Ace batsman Joe Root, in trying to follow the Bazball approach had raced to 16 off 9 deliveries before he lobbed a catch at point to Axar Patel.

Following Ollie Pope’s dismissal with score on 132, Root was expected to take England to the target. However, his wicket put pressure back on England.

Crawley and Jonny Bairstow added 40 for the fifth wicket and looked like rebuilding England but both got dismissed at the stroke of tea.

Skipper Stokes (11) was run out in what appeared to be a complacent manner, with the score on 220. He was the seventh wicket down.

Ben Foakes and Hartley added 55 but once the former was gone, the writing was on the wall.

England had won the first Test by 28 runs.

The second Test at Visakhapatnam saw a few achievements and records…

Firstly, Jasprit Bumrah took 9/91 and became the 16th Indian to get to 150 Test wickets. Anil Kumble (619 wickets), Ravichandran Ashwin (499), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Zaheer Khan (311), Ishant Sharma (311), Ravindra Jadeja (280), Bishan Singh Bedi (266), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (242), Javagal Srinath (236), Mohammed Shami (229), Erapalli Prasanna (189), Umesh Yadav (170), Vinoo Mankad (162), and S Venkataraghavan (156) are ahead of him in the list.

Secondly, James Anderson took 5/76 in second the Test to be just five short of 700 Test wickets.

Thirdly, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 209 to notch the first Test double century of his career and 56th by Indian batsmen.
