Gary Kirsten resigns as Pakistan's white ball coach

28 Oct, 2024

The South African, who coached India to the World Cup title in 2011, had taken over as coach in April 2024 but failure to see them through the league phase of T20 World Cup went against him

Gary Kirsten has resigned from his position as Head Coach of the Pakistan men's ODI and T20I teams just six months into his tenure.

Kirsten's resignation was announced on Monday, just one week prior to the start of Pakistan's white-ball series in Australia. In April 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) offered the South African a two-year contract to fill the position.

Test coach Jason Gillespie will replace Kirsten for the Australia tour, which starts on November 4, the PCB announced through social media.

Gillespie, who took over as red-ball coach around the time Kirsten had taken over, recently guided Pakistan to their first home Test series victory since 2021. Following his appointment as Head Coach, Kirsten's main task was to oversee the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies, where Pakistan lost to both India and the USA and had to exit from the league phase.

The team was getting ready for the Champions Trophy 2025, which will be the first ICC event to be held in Pakistan in almost 30 years. On October 28, the first group of players will leave for Melbourne, and on October 29, the remaining players will follow. Pakistan will go to Zimbabwe for another white-ball series after the visit of Australia.
