ICC to investigate USA leg of 2024 T20 World Cup

22 Jul, 2024

The ICC Board confirmed that there will be a review into the delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024; USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have also been put on notice over functioning of their cricket board

Close on the heels of reports in the media that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken cognisance of the impropriety in the delivery of the T20 World Cup’s USA leg, the apex cricket body has confirmed that it will look into the matter.

“The ICC Board confirmed that there will be a review into the delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. This will be overseen by three directors, Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo and Imran Khwaja who will report back to the Board later in the year,” said a statement from ICC on the conclusion of the ICC Annual Conference in Colombo on Monday, July 22.

The ICC Board and the ICC Annual General Meeting was attended by all 108 ICC Members.

There have been reports that the cost of the USA leg, in which 16 of the 55 T20 World Cup matches were held, exceeded the original budget. As per a media report, the matter was raised by Pankaj Khimji, chief of Oman Cricket.

Among other matters, the USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have been put on notice.

“USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have been formally put on notice and have 12 months to rectify their current non-compliance with the ICC Membership Criteria. Neither Member is considered to have in place a fit for purpose detailed governance and administrative structure and systems,” added the statement from ICC.

“The ICC Americas office will work with Cricket Chile to support them in remedying their non-compliance. The Board agreed that a Normalisation Committee comprising of Board and Management representatives will be set up to oversee and monitor USA Cricket’s compliance roadmap and the ICC Board will reserve its right to suspend or expel the Member for continued non-compliance.”
