Kenya emerge winners of Quandrangular Cup T20 after final washed out

12 Jul, 2024

The final and the third place playoff matches were abandoned without toss due to poor ground conditions following rain leaving round-robin winners Kenya take home the trophy

In what turned out to be a damp squib of a final, Kenya emerged winners of the Quadrangular Cup T20 series played in Nairobi. The result was based on the performance in the round-robin phase where the 2003 World Cup semi-finalists remained unbeaten and finished on top with 17 points.

They were supposed to play the final against Malawi. However, poor ground conditions due to heavy rain at the Sikh Union Club Ground ensured the abandonment of the match without a ball bowled.

The third place playoff between Zambia and Rwanda also could not take place due to the same reason.

Kenya, who ended with 17 points in nine matches, won eight of the league games and split points in the abandoned last league game against Malawi on July 9.

Malawi ended second on points table with nine points, winning four for eight points. The abandoned game on July 9 earned them a point to take the total to nine.

Zambia and Rwanda won two games each and finished third and fourth respectively on five points. Zambia was ahead of Rwanda due to better net run rate (-0.806 to -1.324).

Kenya now play host to Nigeria for a five-match T20I series which starts on July 12 and ends on July 17.
