20 Sep, 2023

Opening batsman Tony Ura hammered 62 off 38 balls and shared a century partnership for the first wicket to take the team to 45-run win over Malaysia

Right-handed opening batsman Tony Ura smashed 62 off 38 balls and shared a century partnership (of 108 runs) for the first wicket with skipper Assad Vala to help Papua New Guinea (PNG) beat Malaysia by 45 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in the Malaysia T20I Tri-series 2023 at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Rain showed up immediately after the fall of Ura’s wicket but by that time, PNG were already ahead of the target by 45 runs.

Earlier, Malaysia had got off to a decent start despite the fall of early wickets of both the openers.

No. 3 batsman Muhammad Amir (39) and No. 4 and skipper Ahmad Faiz added 59 for the third wicket to help Malaysia reach 84/3 in 10 overs. However, the latter batsmen fell like ninepins as the Malaysians trudged to 152/9 in 20 overs.

For PNG, pace bowler Alei Nao took 3/26 while fellow medium-pacer Norman Vanua took 2/29.

It was an impressive win for PNG, who played the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE.

Ura was the Player of the Match.

Brief Scores: Malaysia 152/9 in 20 overs (Muhammad Amir 39, Ahmad Faiz 49, Alei Nao 3/26, Norman Vanua 2/29, Semo Kamea 2/35) lost to PNG 108/1 in 9.4 overs (Tony Ura 62, Assad Vala 38) by 45 runs under D/L method.
