Consy Aweko, the Uganda off-spinner, has joined the likes of Megan Schutt, Nida Dar, Ellyse Perry, Shabnim Ismail, Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone in the 100-wicket club in T20 Internationals. However, she has a much better economy rate and average than the celebrated players
Consy Aweko of Uganda has become the 12th woman cricketer to notch 100 wickets in T20 Internationals, thereby joining the likes of Megan Schutt, Nida Dar, Anisa Mohammed, Ellyse Perry, Shabnim Ismail, Nattaya Boochatham, Katherine Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Devine, Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone in the elite club.
The off-spinner from the east African nation is the second player from an Associate nation to achieve the feat after off-spinner Boochatham of Thailand.
Consy achieved the milestone against South Africa women during an African Games semi-final match in Accra on March 11. Uganda, however, lost the game but went on to beat Nigeria women in the 3rd place playoff to win bronze. Zimbabwe women won the gold, after beating the South Africans.
The 32-year-old Consy now has 102 wickets in 74 matches.
Interestingly, she has the second-best average among all the women who have taken 100 wickets in T20Is. Her 10.07 is next only to Boochatham’s 9.48.
She also has the best economy rate among those with a century of wickets, with 3.68.
“Milestone for the Skipper! Congratulations to Consy Aweko,” wrote the Uganda Cricket Association on X (formerly Twitter).
Consy returned with seven wickets from the tournament with her best being 3/20 against Rwanda.
Her career best spell is 4/6, which came against Sierra Leone Women in Harare in 2019.
