The Americans who are playing the T20 World Cup for the first time moved to the next stage at the expense of Pakistan after washout against Ireland gave them one point
The United States of America, debuting at the ICC T20 World Cup, made it to the Super 8s of the tournament joining India from Group A at the expense of Pakistan after their last league match against Ireland in Lauderhill, Florida was abandoned without a ball bowled.
The ‘no result’ put them in second position behind India. They now have five points from four matches. Pakistan and Canada have two points each and even if Pakistan were to beat Ireland in the last match, they would reach only four points, one point less than Ireland.
It was a huge achievement for USA, who last played an ICC tournament in 2004, at the Champions Trophy, in which they were eliminated in the first round. Since then they have not played any major tournament, let alone an ICC event. They will also play in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
The Americans got the T20 International status in 2018 after the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to grant it to all its members.
India top the group with six points and they have one more match to play, against Canada at Lauderhill. Pakistan face Ireland in their last league match at the same venue.
The Super 8s begin on June 19. USA are in Group 2, clubbed with South Africa, West Indies and one of England or Scotland.
USA also qualified for the 2026 edition by virtue of reaching the top eight.
