World Cup prize money: Winning team can buy four Porsche 918 Spyder cars

25 Sep, 2023

The ICC has announced a 10 million US dollars pot for the teams at the upcoming World Cup. The winner will take home four million dollars while the runners-up will earn 2 million dollars. Group stage wins will also attract reward

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will dole out 10 million US dollars (or over 83 crore rupees in terms of currency of India, where the tournament is being hosted) as prize money for the upcoming ICC 50-over Cricket World Cup.

“The winners of the Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 are set to receive USD 4 million (33.25 crore rupees) of the USD 10 million total prize pool, ICC announced on 22 September. The runners-up of the Final to be played on 19 November at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will take home USD 2 million (16.6 crore rupees),” said the ICC in a statement.

In short, the winning team will get money that can buy eight studio apartments in Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa or buy four limited-edition Porsche 918 Spyder car, which takes just 2.8 seconds to touch 62mph speed.

The format of the tournament is such that all the teams play each other once in a round-robin league before the top four make it to the semi-finals.

The losing semi-finalists will get USD 8,00,000 each (6.6 crore Indian rupees).

“There's prize money up for grabs for [teams] winning their Group Stage games as well, with teams getting USD 40,000 (33.2 lakh rupees) for every victory. At the end of the Group Stage, teams that fail to reach the knockouts will each get USD 100,000 (83.1 lakh rupees),” added the statement.

It should be noted that the ICC has recently sought parity in the prize money of both men’s and women’s teams.

“The prize money also sets the precedent for the upcoming ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in 2025, with ICC announcing equal sums for both men's and women's events during the Annual Conference held in Durban, South Africa in July 2023,” the statement concluded.
