Cricket Scotland gets all-clear from government body over racism but...

22 Nov, 2024

After Sportscotland's Changing the Boundaries report identified 448 signs of institutional racism, Cricket Scotland was placed under special measures in July 2022

Two years after it was placed into special measures over incidents of racism, Cricket Scotland has announced that it has received all-clear from Sport Scotland, the national agency for sport in Scotland.

“Cricket Scotland is pleased to confirm the removal of special measures by @sportscotland, following the completion of the Cricket Scotland Action Plan,” Cricket Scotland announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

After Sportscotland's Changing the Boundaries report identified 448 signs of institutional racism, Cricket Scotland was placed under special measures in July 2022.

The governing body of cricket in the country that is part of the United Kingdom failed 29 of the 31 ‘tests’ that were used to gauge the issue and only partially completed the requirements for the other two.

However, not everyone, including Majid Haq, is convinced.

Haq, the former Scottish cricket international, was among the two players who had filed complaints of institutional racism. The other was Qasim Sheikh. Both had complained that racism affected their cricket careers.

“You say further information on the removal of special measures can be found on the sportscotland website according to your statement but nothing is actually on the SportScotland website about it at this moment in time,” wrote Haq on X (formerly Twitter).

In June this year, another Scotland international cricketer Hamza Tahir retired after saying that he is a victim of racism.
