West Indies crush Uganda by second-biggest margin in T20 World Cup

09 Jun, 2024

The co-host beat World Cup debutants Uganda by 134 runs as left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein takes five wickets

West Indies made short work of debutants Uganda, by cruising to the second-biggest win in terms of runs in T20 World Cup history. The co-host won the match by 134 runs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, skittling out the Ugandans for 39 in 12 overs after having scored 173/5 in 20 overs themselves.

Batting first, Brandon King (13) and Johnson Charles (44) opened their arms in the first powerplay phase. The two added 41 in just over four overs before King was dismissed by left-arm spinner Alpesh Ramjani. However, this brought in Nicholas Pooran who smacked two sixes early in his innings. Pooran made 22 off 17.

Contributions from Rovman Powell (23), Sherfane Rutherford (22), and Andre Russell (30) took the team to their eventual score.

In response, Uganda simply couldn’t get going.

Only Juma Miyagi, at No. 9, could get to double figures with 13.

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein took 5/11 in four overs. This is the second-best figures by a West Indian in T20 International cricket. The best is 6/17 by Obed McCoy.

“It was a tough day for us. We were outplayed in both the departments. We must take lessons from the match. We need to understand what we can do better as a batting unit,” said Uganda skipper Brian Masaba.

“If we have to get better, we have to play more games against such opponents. These are good lessons to carry back home. We love having the fans. They have supported us through thick and thin.”

Windies skipper Rovman Powell gave credit to Hosein.

“No wonder why he is the number 3 ranked bowler in this format.”
